Android 4.0.3, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), has been a long time coming to the HTC Thunderbolt. Just ask anyone who owns a Thunderbolt and has been waiting with the patience of Job for an OS upgrade. Thanks to RootzWiki Developer ihtfp69 from Team BAMF, Thunderbolt owners got just what they have been waiting for – an ICS update. Verizon's first LTE capable phone may not be running Jelly Bean, but with this leak many Thunderbolt owners can finally leave Gingerbread behind.
The demand for ICS was so great it was nearly impossible to get on Team BAMF's website last night to download it. Once the link went live, news spread like wildfire through the community and Thunderbolt owners came out of the woodwork to download the ROM. Forum users set up mirrors to help alleviate the stress on BAMF’s server.
The released ROM is stock ICS which has been rooted and deodexed. This is an HTC Sense 3.6 ROM and has working 3G and 4G data. Ihtfp69 has also removed the HTC spyware which was included with this test ROM. No new radios were included, so users need to have the most recent .19 radios flashed on their Thunderbolts.
Even though it's not Sense 4.0, I didn't find Sense 3.6 offensive (I'm a Sense fan). The updated email and calendar apps are a nice addition - especialy since I use these apps quite frequently. I also liked the upgrade to the Microsoft Exchange function, with the addition of support for Microsoft Outlook Tasks. I find Google tasks to be nothing short of an abysmal failure compared to the functionality of Outlook Tasks.
Hopefully this leaked ROM will breathe new life into RootzWiki’s once robust Thunderbolt development forum. While the stock ROM has some lag issues, with the help of developers and a custom kernel, ICS should run fine on the Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt community is hopeful that former developers, most of whom have moved on to other phones, will show them some love in the near future.
